Ah, the holidays. With nostalgic music, twinkling lights and families gearing up for visits with the in-laws or grandparents, what could go wrong? You’re ready to sit back and take a few days off work to spend time with those you love most, and the last thing you want to worry about is an unprecedented security issue. Despite the joy and cheer, the holidays are not immune to danger and criminal activity—in fact, quite the opposite is true.
Crime increases during the holiday season and on the weekends due to greater free time, increased alcohol consumption and increases in stress due to tensions at home when family members visit. Legal sources at HG.org reported that robbery and personal larceny increased by approximately 20% during December compared to all other months of the year, most likely because people are scrambling to find gifts for their loved ones they simply can’t afford.
According to the 2019 National Retail Federation Organized Retail Crime Survey, organized retail crime cost retailers $703,320 per $1 billion in sales. Though these numbers vary from year to year, 2019 was the fourth year in a row for the average loss to top $700K. In addition to the high-profit losses, 68% of retailers who have faced organized retail crime feel like perpetrators are significantly more aggressive and violent than in previous years.
Despite the industry’s best efforts, 97% of these businesses said they were victims of retail crime within the past 12 months. Believe it or not, while there are laws restricting organized retail crime at the state level, there still is not a federal law against it. When businesses fail to receive federal support, they rely heavily on protection from state and local law enforcement. Due to the frequency of organized retail crime, it is critical that retailers have an extra line of defense in order to minimize their losses while also protecting staff and customers on-site.
During the holiday season, with increased foot traffic in and out of stores, this only presents a greater risk. Added security by use of a security officer during the holiday season is exactly what retailers and other businesses need to protect their merchandise, customers and personnel. Security officers can step in and intervene before a crime happens and hold off aggressive or violent individuals before law enforcement is able to arrive.
